Inspirational story of Tony Quan

The Eyewriter – Giving graffiti artist paralyzed by ALS a way to create art with his eyes.

Along with the development of technology, most of the things that could not be achieved in the past have now become achievable. Unfortunately, the mindsets of people have not been developed along with technology in order to think about achieving the impossible. Only a handful amount of individuals work hard in order to achieve the unachievable things in their lives, regardless of the difficulties that they face. Tony Quan, who is also known as Tempt is a perfect example to prove the above mentioned fact.

Tony Quan was working as a graffiti artist, but he was unfortunately affected with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and lost the functionality of his muscles. This was a heartbreaking moment for the artist because he felt like he lost everything in the world. However, he still had the creative talent within his mind and was looking forward to continue with his graffiti artwork.

The members of Free Art and Technology got to know about the story of Tony Quan. They had their own research lab, where they conducted experiments about enabling artists with disabilities to carry forward the work that they have been doing in the past. The research team developed a low cost and an open source eye tracking system and gave it to Tony Quan. They named this innovative product as the Eyewriter because it had the ability to track the movements of the eye and then sketch it on another surface.

Tony Quan was really impressed with the gift that he received from Free Art and Technology. It didn’t take a long time for him to get used to the new device and he was seen creating graffiti work while staying in his bed after a couple of days. Tony Quan knows that he is affected with a fatal neuron disease, which affects the entire nervous system. But he didn’t want to get away from his life. He accepted the challenges with wide open arms and now he is pursuing his passion.

When Tony Quan used the Eyewriter for the very first time, he said that it was the first time that he drew something after 2003. It was a long pause and a person cannot simply think about just lying on a bed without doing anything for such a long period of time. However, Tony Quan didn’t want to give up and he was finally able to do what he always wanted to. Tony Quan has also mentioned that the entire experience was like taking a breath after being under water for five minutes.

Tony Quan now happily spends his time lying on the hospital bed by doing what he loves to do. He is a talented graffiti artist and he gives life to amazing artwork with the use of his eyes. This is a perfect inspirational story to prove that we can achieve anything in our lives, regardless of the difficulties, if we have the power of mind to do it.
